The New York Times: “Cambodia Takes to the Roads in Building Spree” - January 18, 2010
Article Summary: Last month, the government officially inaugurated Highways 5 and 6. Newly refurbished, these roads are expected to help trade, tourism, and better the lives of the local population. A country now at peace, this recent inauguration is just part of a large road building endeavor which includes 10 projects totaling 1,173km of new pavement. The roads to the Thai border cost about $350,000 per km. Though expensive, financing does not seem to be an issue as China and other countries are eagerly vying for influence in Cambodia. In Asia, roads are a sign of development. For Cambodia in particular, these new road developments are helping to unify a country previously fractured by civil war.
